Back in the Biblical days, the Pharisees and Sadducee’ s (or holier than thou high priest) boasted of all their fasting and how much they prayed and let everyone know how self-righteous they were. They thought they kept the law, therefore, they felt as though they did not need a savior. Many of us are exactly like that for we boast of how we go to church on Sundays and how we are not a bad person and do not do this or that. Little did they know that Truth was standing in their midst.
Well, there is a story in Mark 10:17-22 about a man who came running to Jesus, and kneeled to Him and asked what he could do to inherit eternal life. The man referred to Jesus as Good Master and Jesus responded by saying Why callest thou me good? There is none good but one, that is God. (In other words, Jesus was telling the man that you must know that I am God) Jesus really had a way with word and made people account for every word that came out of their mouths.
Anyway, Jesus went on to explain that the law states do not kill, steal, bear false witness, defraud not and honor thy father and mother. Well, the man told Jesus that he had observed all those things from his youth. Jesus then replied with love and said, “there is one thing thou lackest, go thy way, sell whatsoever thou has, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come take up the cross and follow me.” You see, this man did not understand that following Jesus was more profitable.
Well, that man went away sad, because he had much riches. Brothers and sisters, there was one law that this man could not fulfill and that is the law that states: thou shalt have no other god before thee. God was less important than his possessions. This man’s possessions were his god.
When we become true followers, we are justified because Jesus Christ, our Lord, and Savior fulfilled all of the requirements of the law. It is finished, only believe, repent and receive the precious gift of SALVATION! AMEN AND AMEN!
