The Book of Judges chapter 6 tells of a story of Gideon, a judge chosen to rescue Israel from their enemy. I call Gideon Captain Scary because he really was quite nervous and fearful. Although Gideon was fearful, he, ultimately exhibited great courage and faith and obeyed God even in the face of great opposition.
You know brothers and sisters, God has a way of choosing the least likely person to carry out his plans and purposes. God will choose people who appear to be unqualified for His assigned task. Indeed, God may instruct any of his chosen one’s to do something that seems scary or nerve wrecking. Nevertheless, it is wise that Christians pray for discernment and understanding in moving in the direction God is pointing. Having said all these things, the point I’m trying to bring home is we must learn to answer God’s higher calling and not be afraid of people. God told Jeremiah in Jeremiah 1:8, “Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the LORD.” It is highly possible that we Christians are partially the blame for much of the chaos and confusion going on in this world. Why we may be partially the blame? Because many of us are too afraid to step out on faith and obey God’s calling on our lives. Although Gideon was afraid…he stood firm and obeyed…that’s more than many of us can say for ourselves…right? Well, it’s not too late. Let us search ourselves and strive to come into alignment with God’s plans and purposes for us in this world.
